Sisean: Journal of Theology and Christian Mission https://spmb.stt-hkbp.ac.id/index.php/jtcm
Sisean is a Batak Toba term meaning "disciple," a concept directly linked to the disciples of Jesus in the New Testament. The term is used to describe the individuals whom Jesus personally called and commissioned to spread God's mission throughout the world (Matt 28; Mark 16).

In this vein, Journal Sisean seeks to encourage Christians to participate in God's mission to the ends of the earth, following the example of Jesus’ disciples. Christians, having been called, privileged, and sent, are invited to take an active role in the mission of salvation.

The journal focuses on Christian theology, particularly in relation to missiology—the theological study of the mission of Christ and its application in contemporary contexts. It emphasizes that the theology and practice of mission cannot be separated from their biblical foundations in the Old and New Testaments, as well as from the contextual theology shaped by current social, cultural, religious, and political realities at local, regional, and global levels.

Journal Sisean provides a platform for scholars, theologians, church leaders, and other religious practitioners to contribute their research, reflections, and practical insights on mission theology within the complexities of today's world.

Journal Information
1. Using a method that re-examines the socio-historical context of the religions involved in the incident, this study aims to help resolve the conflict between plurality and strong religious nuances in the current heterogeneous society. In the life of society, indeed, there are still many stories in the Quran that, textually, have the potential to encourage various actions that ultimately lead to negative conflict. The idea of deradicalization of people's understanding of the Quran, particularly various stories in it that can be misunderstood, is essential so that the people will not be encouraged to commit acts of violence in the name of religion. Reaffirming the peaceful and tolerant face of religions must be a common commitment, without having fear of losing their identity toward other religious communities. Indeed, Islamic teachings have promoted tolerance, allowing anyone to embrace their faith, thereby fostering peace and harmony in religious life. The results of this study will describe the basis and principles of tolerance through the "Conquest of Mecca."
Andreas Bryian Gultom Copyright (c) 2025 Sisean: Journal of Theology and Christian Mission https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0 https://spmb.stt-hkbp.ac.id/index.php/jtcm/article/view/87 Wed, 11 Jun 2025 00:00:00 +0000 The Influence of Structural Injustice of Power in Society on Judas's Decision to Hang Himself https://spmb.stt-hkbp.ac.id/index.php/jtcm/article/view/89
The death of Judas Iscariot in Matthew 27:1–10 is often interpreted merely as punishment for betrayal. However, the social-scientific criticism approach allows for a more complex reading—one that sees his death as a response to the social pressures and structural injustices that marked society during the time the Gospel of Matthew was written. This study examines the social context of Roman agrarian society, characterized by the dominance of both political and religious elites who systematically oppressed non-elite groups. Within this framework, Judas’ death is examined as an expression of moral alienation experienced by individuals who are denied a place in the community. His act of hanging himself is understood not only as a personal act of despair but also as the result of the failure of both social and religious systems to offer paths toward restoration. Thus, the text delivers a sharp critique of religious leadership lacking in empathy and highlights how Judas’ death reflects the tangible effects of structural injustice under oppressive power.
Rosnani Butarbutar Copyright (c) 2025 Sisean: Journal of Theology and Christian Mission https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0 https://spmb.stt-hkbp.ac.id/index.php/jtcm/article/view/89 Wed, 11 Jun 2025 00:00:00 +0000 Ingwer Ludwig Nommensen as Primus Inter Pares https://spmb.stt-hkbp.ac.id/index.php/jtcm/article/view/88
This paper will discuss the role of Ingwer Ludwig Nomensen as the most prominent evangelist in Batak land (Tapanuli, Silindung, Toba and Simalungun). Although IL. Nomensen was the fifth evangelist to come to Batak land after other missionaries who had arrived earlier, but he is often labeled as the most successful. Of course, the question is what caused him to become more famous and famous than other missionaries. His name is so big when compared to other missionaries working in Batak land. The author uses a literature review-based research method sourced from relevant literature. The author also uses the term primus inter pares in describing Nomensen's personality which is quite influential and respected. The purpose of this paper is to examine how Nomensen's evangelization method was so efficient and massive that it resulted in Christianity in Batak land. The mission strategy applied by Nomensen, the resulting impact, and the ability to lead become the special urgency of this paper. In preaching the gospel, Nomensen first understood the context of the area to be visited, such as by studying the language and culture. With an adaptive approach Nomensen was able to gain the trust of the Batak people. Such an approach became Nomensen's specialty. In addition to preaching the gospel, Nomensen also left behind many advancements, such as in the fields of health and education. It is these skills that prove how Nomensen is the best among others.

yakub silaban Copyright (c) 2025 Sisean: Journal of Theology and Christian Mission https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0 https://spmb.stt-hkbp.ac.id/index.php/jtcm/article/view/88 Wed, 11 Jun 2025 00:00:00 +0000 Ecumenism in the Digital Era of Generation Z https://spmb.stt-hkbp.ac.id/index.php/jtcm/article/view/90
Understanding ecumenism is a crucial aspect of building Christian unity and fellowship. Contemporary Christians, especially Generation Z youth from various denominations, live in today’s digital age. As a generation immersed in the advancements of digital technology, generation Z readily receives information through social media platforms like TikTok, Facebook, and others. However, this has led to widespread misinformation and negatively impacts the sustainability of ecumenism. This is caused by various theological polarization or debates on theological teaching from one church denomination, commented on by individuals in posts and attracting numerous comments. Gradually, this results in Generation Z lacking tolerance for differences in church teaching and exacerbates the challenges to ecumenism. This paper employs a literature study approach, reading and comparing data from various books, articles, and other media to deepen the understanding of ecumenical efforts in embracing the fellowship of the body of Christ among Generation Z. This paper aims to provide a deeper understanding of ecumenism and offer solutions for the church to engage generation Z youth in understanding ecumenism amidst the theological polarizations and debates within churches.
Boni Fasius Sihombing Copyright (c) 2025 Sisean: Journal of Theology and Christian Mission https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0 https://spmb.stt-hkbp.ac.id/index.php/jtcm/article/view/90 Wed, 11 Jun 2025 00:00:00 +0000 Truth as a Foundation https://spmb.stt-hkbp.ac.id/index.php/jtcm/article/view/100
This article conducts a comparative study to analyze the meaning of truth in the biblical text of John 17:17, and the Simalungun philosophy of Habonaron Do Bona. This is done under the principle of reconciling the concept of truth within biblical foundations with local wisdom, which is then applied to shape a more contextual identity for GKPS (the Simalungun Protestant Christian Church). As a contextual church, GKPS strives to communicate the Christian faith within Simalungun culture. GKPS, as a church, also inevitably confronts acts of untruthfulness, such as corruption, theft, dishonesty, and similar issues. Therefore, this article seeks to address these challenges by reasserting the significance of truth within the GKPS context. Using contextual theology theory, comparative research, and qualitative methods, this article demonstrates that truth possesses a robust biblical foundation while remaining rooted in local culture. Through the intellectual contributions presented here, the truth can be taught and understood within the GKPS context by framing it as a biblical Christian teaching that is also deeply rooted in local cultural traditions.
Jan Christian Wismar Saragih Copyright (c) 2025 Sisean: Journal of Theology and Christian Mission https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0 https://spmb.stt-hkbp.ac.id/index.php/jtcm/article/view/100 Wed, 11 Jun 2025 00:00:00 +0000
